How Do Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) Operate?
ATUs follow four key stages.
First is pretreatment, where solids are separated and stored.
The second stage is the core of the system, the ATU itself. During this phase, an air pump forces air into the tank, increasing the oxygen levels. This boost in oxygen accelerates bacterial growth, aiding the breakdown process.
Next, the mixture of water and solids moves into the settling tank, where gravity separates the remaining solids from the water.
Once this separation is complete, the treated water, called effluent, is much cleaner and safer for the environment than traditional septic tanks.
